Amelia Reid-Meredith announces departure from New Zealand’s longest running drama series.

After six years playing the loveable Bella Durville on New Zealand’s longest running drama series, Amelia Reid-Meredith has announced her departure from Shortland Street.

“This has not been an easy decision for me to make. I have enjoyed every moment of my time on the show and learnt so much in the process,” comments Amelia.

“I have decided it's time to take a break and pursue other projects and opportunities,” she adds.

Reid-Meredith is leaving Auckland but hasn’t ruled out a return to the show in the future.

"I have been thrilled to be a part of this amazing on-screen family, many of whom have become friends for life so this decision was not taken lightly. But sometimes you just have to follow your heart and do what you feel is right at the time, and I definitely won’t say I will never be back!”

"We're keeping details of what's in store firmly under wraps for now, but there are still lots of twists to come before Bella leaves our screens," comments producer Maxine Fleming.

Reid-Meredith will be on our screens until November.

"I for one will miss both the actor and the character and on behalf of all at Shortland Street, I wish Amelia all the love and luck in the world and I'm certain that her future will be full of continued success,” adds Fleming.

  • Time for another mystery

There can be few more enduring pleasures in TV watching than settling in and spending an evening solving a nice juicy murder. And the good news is we're at absolutely no risk of ever running out of them. Poor saps are forever meeting their untimely ends in Midsomer. Old Miss Marple's always got her beak in a case. And then there's Poirot, Frost, Morse. Murders never cease.

The Brokenwood Mysteries, which returned to Prime for its second series last night, has carved out its own niche in the genre. Its first series, which screened last year, drew upon the abundance of essential murder mystery ingredients on offer here in New Zealand - small towns, eccentric locals, strange love triangles, petty infighting - and distilled them all into the fictionalised country town of Brokenwood.

When the TV Guide sits down with The Brokenwood Mysteries stars Fern Sutherland and Neill Rea, it is in a location that their characters would usually avoid.

It is difficult to imagine Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd and Detective Kristin Sims sipping coffee at an inner-city Auckland cafe – they are more often out in the countryside around the small town of Brokenwood, getting their hands dirty and exposing the darkest secrets of the town's inhabitants.

Rea and Sutherland have just wrapped filming of the crime drama's second season, which starts on Prime this week, and provides the detective duo with another four murders to solve.

Shortland Street is looking to increase its writing team, specifically dialogue writers.

We are setting up a 13-week mentorship programme, in Auckland, where new writers can learn the craft of writing for a serial drama and hopefully achieve sufficient success to earn a regular place on our roster. There will be some remuneration for the 13 weeks.

    The programme:
-‐ Introduction to the writing and production process
    -‐ Observing the storylining process
    -‐ Shadow writing part/full episodes
-‐ Writing trial episodes which will ultimately go to screen

Along the way, the new writers will be guided and supported by one of our top writers.

    Who can apply?
Anyone who can demonstrate a commitment to writing, especially television drama. Your initial application will need to be accompanied by a CV and a sample of your writing. Whilst this
need not be a dramatic piece, we will be looking for some measure of skill and assurance.

    What is the selection process?
From the initial applications, we’ll come up with a long list. These people will be asked to write five scenes of Shortland Street from the storyline of a past episode.

If your scenes show some promise, you will be given feedback and asked to re-work the scenes where necessary. If you’re able to improve on the scenes, you will go on the short list.

All applicants on the short list will be interviewed.

There will be up to four spaces on the programme.

    Applications close on 10th November 2014 @ 10am
Long list announced 14th November 2014
Short list announced 8th December 2014
    Interviews 16th / 17th December 2014
Successful applicants will be announced by 19th December 2014

  • Westside casting line-up revealed

Antonia Prebble (Outrageous Fortune, White Lies, The Blue Rose) and David de Lautour (The Kick, NCIS, Once Upon a Time) headline the cast of South Pacific Pictures’ new comedy drama series WESTSIDE, the six-part Outrageous Fortune prequel which is coming next year to TV3.

Prebble stars as Rita, the West family matriarch – a role she played briefly in flashback scenes during Outrageous Fortune season four. De Lautour plays the role of Ted West, the 30-something incarnation of the beloved ‘Grandpa’ character who was deftly portrayed in all six seasons of Outrageous Fortune by the late Frank Whitten.

“Antonia was attached to this project from the beginning,” explains series co-creator James Griffin. “The Wests always spoke of how much Loretta was the spitting image of her grandmother, Rita, and we played with that very briefly during Outrageous Fortune but with WESTSIDE we head back to the 1970s and we will discover much more about Ted and Rita West…and everything else there is to know about the roots of the West family tree.”

When it came to casting the actor to play Ted, Griffin explains that they were looking for someone who captured the real heart and soul of the character. “What we realised during the casting process is that we couldn’t just expect to find a younger version of Frank [Whitten]. What we needed to find is the actor who embodies the essence of Ted West and who would believably go on to become ‘Grandpa’ in the future. David brings that special something to the role.”

A skilled group of local actors rounds out the core cast as Ted and Rita’s friends, associates and nemeses:
    • Dan Musgrove (Underbelly: Land of the Long Green Cloud, 3 Mile Limit, Go Girls) as Lefty Munroe
    • Esther Stephens (When We Go to War, Go Girls, The Doctor Blake Mysteries) as Ngaire Munroe
    • Will Hall (Nothing Trivial, Siege, Auckland Daze) as Detective Mike McCarthy
    • Todd Emerson (Agent Anna, Spies & Lies, Amazing Extraordinary Friends) as Bjelke “Bilkey” Van Heeder
    • Pana Hema-Taylor (The Brokenwood Mysteries, The Dead Lands, Spartacus: War of the Damned & Blood & Sand) as Bert Thompson
    • Xavier Horan (The Dead Lands, The Dark Horse, The Kick) as Phineas O’Driscoll
    • Sophie Hambleton (Consent: The Louise Nicholas Story, White Lies, Everything We Loved) as Carol O’Driscoll

WESTSIDE commenced shooting on Sunday and will screen on TV3 in 2015. The series is co-created by Rachel Lang (Outrageous Fortune, Go Girls, Nothing Trivial) and James Griffin (Outrageous Fortune, The Almighty Johnsons, Sione’s Wedding), produced by John Laing (Outrageous Fortune, Mercy Peak, Venus and Mars) and the series’ lead director is Mark Beesley (who has also worked as the lead director in establishing the first seasons of Outrageous Fortune, The Blue Rose and The Almighty Johnsons). The production was funded by New Zealand on Air.

WESTSIDE is a 6 x 1hour comedy drama series produced by South Pacific Pictures for TV3 in New Zealand. The show is a prequel to the acclaimed New Zealand series Outrageous Fortune and is set in 1970s Auckland against a backdrop of real-life historical events. • The Brokenwood Mysteries delivers killer ratings for Prime

Prime TV’s new local series The Brokenwood Mysteries charmed Kiwi viewers last night to give the channel its highest Sunday night rating in the 8.30pm timeslot all year.

Nearly 200,000 viewers watched Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) and his off-sider Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) solve the first suspicious death in Brokenwood last night – double Prime’s normal ratings in this time slot.

Prime achieved a 13% share in the 5+ demographic, similar to the international blockbuster movie Prometheus on TV3 which also screened last night.

Head of Prime Karen Bieleski was thrilled with the response.

“It’s great to see our own local mystery perform so well, particularly when you consider that this slot has most recently been home to top international murder franchise Poirot,” she said.

“We have had terrific feedback from critics and couldn’t be happier to see that local viewers are tuning in in their thousands. It’s a credit to everyone at South Pacific Pictures who have delivered a wonderfully watchable Kiwi mystery series and NZ on Air for supporting fresh new home-grown drama on Prime.”

In the channel’s 25-54 demographic, The Brokenwood Mysteries rated a 3.2 TARP/10% share, again rating nearly double the 2014 average.

Viewers not only voted with their remotes, but droves took to their social media accounts to comment on The Brokenwood Mysteries. Comments included: “Enjoyed it, beautifully shot & well-paced.”; “Surprisingly good NZ TV comeydrama”; “ loved it! will be eagerly waiting for next week”; and “Brilliant. Loved it. Homegrown masterpiece.”

In next week’s episode of The Brokenwood Mysteries, “Sour Grapes”, it’s the annual Brokenwood Wine Show and Mike and Kristin find there’s more than just wine stored in the fermentation vats.

  • Nothing Trivial telefeature announced

Fans of Nothing Trivial will finally get some answers – NZ On Air has agreed to fund a two-hour tele-feature to wrap up the series, after series three ended unexpectedly on a cliff-hanger.

NZ On Air will provide $1.6million for the tele-feature which will trace the lives of the popular characters over a year. Produced by South Pacific Pictures, it is expected to screen on TV One later this year.

“The storylines, acting and production values on Nothing Trivial were terrific. We have supported this tele-feature because there was still a loyal fan base of 265,000 throughout the third series, and we think they deserve the catharsis of a conclusion,” said NZ On Air Chief Executive Jane Wrightson.

Viewers had been left hanging about whether central character Catherine was dead or alive.

“We think its important to encourage top quality local drama projects. A conclusion may also make the possibility of overseas sales of the series more viable,” said Ms Wrightson.

  • Outrageous Fortune is coming to the Auckland Museum

Auckland Museum and South Pacific Pictures have joined forces to create Outrageous Fortune: Journey to the Wests, an exclusive summer exhibition that will give Museum visitors the chance to step into the West family’s living room, go behind-the-scenes and get an intimate understanding of the incredible complexities that comprise New Zealand’s most successful television drama series.

Visitors will be able to peel back the layers of Outrageous Fortune to find the relationship between fantasy and reality, while discovering how this hit television show is made.

The exhibition, which is due to open in mid-December 2010, will present popular culture within the context of a wider stimulating debate. It will encourage visitors to ask questions about how a ‘fantasy’ version of Auckland’s identity can in turn influence and contribute to our understanding of ourselves and wider New Zealand culture.

Auckland Museum Trust Board Chairman Dr William Randall said: ”South Pacific Pictures is one of New Zealand’s leading creative companies, and we are pleased to be working alongside them on this initiative. It affords the Museum the opportunity to create a unique, in-depth exhibition that examines what it means to be a New Zealander in the 21st century.”

South Pacific Pictures Chief Executive John Barnett said: “We’re delighted to enable the hundreds of thousands of fans of Outrageous Fortune and many others the opportunity to see the show in a whole new light. Auckland Museum is the ideal partner to reveal magic behind the making of this iconic television series.”

The exhibition will feature actual behind-the-scenes elements from the show and offer unique insights into how the characters are created and how they are brought to life through the script and production process. The Museum will ensure that all care will be taken when developing the exhibition, recognising the wide age range of its visitors.

  • Best on the Box winners announced

OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE took out five awards in the TV Guide Best on the Box People’s Choice Awards:

Robyn Malcolm, who plays tough-as-nails matriarch Cheryl West in has been voted Sexiest Woman for the third year running and Best Actress on television for the sixth year in a row.

Malcolm’s co-star in the hit TV series, Antony Starr, holds onto his Sexiest Man title for the second year and the Best Actor gong for the third time.

Considered a sex symbol on-screen, Antony says off-screen it’s a different story. “If I was treated like that I would probably go and hide in a cave somewhere because I’d be too embarrassed. I tend to slip under the radar in that department which is fine by me,” he says.

In the Sexiest Woman category, Robyn beat runner-up and Breakfast presenter Pippa Wetzell by a mere 73 votes and while she’s flattered at the result says she is a “pretty normal sort of a bird”.

“Perhaps in other parts of the world, the Angelina Jolies get elevated to those positions. But I like that in New Zealand we seem to like our girls normal.”

OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE also topped the Best Drama category for the fifth year running.

  • Kirk Torrance’s Flintlock Musket

Kirk Torrance’s (Outrageous Fortune) powerful new play is brought to the stage by theatre director Rachel House and some of Aotearoa’s leading performers.

This is Aotearoa, early 1800s, on a brutal and barren wasteland a few heartbeats before the plague of the Musket Wars. Set designer John Verryt, lighting designer Jeremy Fern and composers Tama Waipara and Sean Lynch have collectively crafted an atmosphere worthy of this foreboding story.

The landscape has a hostile beauty where the people, like primal spirits, bend to its whim. Their chief, Aoraki (Maaka Pohatu), dominates their lives like the ever demanding earth. An outsider has arrived – a Scotsman (Jason Whyte) – taken in as ‘moki’, Aoraki’s pet. Escaping his own world in search of a new one, his alliance with the chief’s slave, Hine (Nancy Brunning), is about to change the tribe’s destiny with devastating consequences.

This epic story and its haunting imagery merge our cultures and history into a stunning fusion of theatre and movement to create a uniquely New Zealand theatrical event that guarantees to etch a lasting impact on audiences.

  • Outrageous Fortune sisters say no to animal cruelty

The Outrageous Fortune sisters, Siobhan Marshall (Pascalle West) and Antonia Prebble (Loretta West) are urging New Zealanders to help end animal cruelty this World Animal Week by purchasing an exclusive Karen Walker for WSPA t-shirt.

The New Zealand made, 100% organic cotton t-shirts will be sold in The Body Shop stores from 12 to 18 October 2009. The t-shirts will sell for $40, with $20 from every sale going to the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) to help end animal cruelty.

This year’s range of Karen Walker for WSPA t-shirts has been designed by leading New Zealand fashion designer, Karen Walker, to raise much needed funds for the WSPA as well as encourage support for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare.

As Antonia explains, “In New Zealand we are lucky to have relatively high animal welfare standards, but sadly this is not true for a lot of the world.”

A Universal Declaration for animals will give official global recognition of animals as sentient beings capable of experiencing pain and suffering and will ensure the needs of animals remain at the forefront when governments formulate and implement policies concerning them.

Millions of animals face a life of toil, mistreatment, cruelty, pain and suffering as a result of human indifference and neglect.

Global recognition of animals and their welfare would provide the basis for their increased recognition and protection, and it is also closely linked with improving human health, social development and environmental sustainability.

More than 36,000 New Zealanders and 2 million people worldwide have already added their name in support of the Declaration.
Siobhan says, this is a really important issue and all New Zealanders should add their name in support for this Declaration.

The petition can be signed in The Body Shop stores or online at
